Josh Sapwell, a former junior world champion, defeated up and coming junior Joel Pierleoni in the Men’s final in a three set battle. Josh joined the Berkhamsted Elite Tennis Academy towards the end of 2017 as a hitting partner for Joel. Josh has competed at Wimbledon in both senior and junior events before having to stop his career due to injury. “It was amazing to be part of the club finals day for the first time this year. A fantastic day complimented by great weather. I enjoyed he match - mostly! It was packed with high quality tennis and I was pushed all the way by the young boy,” said Josh.
Joel, 15, has continued his steady rise after finishing 5th in the U14 world championship at the end of last year and he has now entered the U18 ITF (International Tennis Federation) age group where he made his first appearance in an event in Cyprus in May. Joel will compete in further U18 ITF events in July in Germany, Belgium and Holland before representing Great Britain at the European Summer Cup.
In a repeat of last year’s final, the Ladies singles was also a thrilling and tightly fought battle with Nicky Simper beating her doubles partner Joelle Elgy, in two close sets. These two were then beaten by Judith Allnutt and Farida Korallus in the Ladies doubles. Judith was also successful in the mixed doubles with Alex Haddad, seeing off Craig Blythe and Natalia Ilkow 7-5, 7-6. Another newcomer to the club, Cameron Johnston, took the Men’s doubles title with first team captain Olly Fradgley. They were delighted to have seen off the challenge from two coaches, Nick Brooks and Jose Mateus.
In the age categories, Tennis Chairman Dave Walden joined up with Penny Kent 25 years after they won the Main mixed doubles together, to take the over 45 Mixed title off Wal and Tracey Mackey. There were so many other matches on the day with 61 members playing a finals event.
Thanks go to Matt Holden who ran the tournament so efficiently with Chris Stringer too. Claire and Graham managed to keep everyone provided with delicious meals, cakes and drinks throughout the day and into the evening too.
As ever though, the day wouldn’t have been the same without our wonderful members who came down to support the event and to play throughout the tournament as well as on finals day itself.
